About Avios
British Airways Executive Club is the loyalty program behind Avios - a currency shared across five oneworld programs (BA, Iberia, Qatar Airways, Aer Lingus, and Finnair). This inter-program portability is the defining feature of the Avios ecosystem: points earned here can be transferred freely 1:1 to any of the other four programs, meaning a Chase or Amex cardholder who transfers to BA Avios effectively has instant access to Iberia Plus and Qatar Privilege Club as well. The award chart is distance-based and fixed, pricing flights by miles flown rather than geographic zone.
Five major US credit card programs transfer to BA Executive Club at 1:1 - American Express Membership Rewards, Chase Ultimate Rewards, Capital One Miles, Bilt Rewards, and Wells Fargo Rewards. Chase is the most valuable pathway: it also transfers to Iberia and Aer Lingus directly, and BA Avios can be redirected to Qatar Privilege Club for Qsuites access. Amex transfers process in 24–48 hours while Chase and Bilt are instant. The breadth of US bank access makes Avios one of the easiest currencies to accumulate from everyday spending.
The most powerful Avios use case for US travelers is not flying British Airways at all - it is using the points to book AA domestic short-haul flights (7,500–9,000 Avios one-way for routes under 650 miles, far cheaper than AAdvantage), Iberia business class to Madrid (40,500 Avios OW off-peak, dramatically less than BA charges for the same route), or Qatar Qsuites (70,000 Avios OW to Doha - the world's best business class at a competitive fixed price). BA own-metal long-haul is the one place to avoid Avios due to the carrier's notoriously high fuel surcharges.

Why transfer points to Avios?
One Currency, Five Loyalty Programs
Avios transfers freely 1:1 between British Airways Executive Club, Iberia Plus, Qatar Privilege Club, Aer Lingus AerClub, and Finnair Plus. Transfer points to BA and then move them to whichever program offers the best redemption for your trip - Qatar for Qsuites, Iberia for Madrid business class at lower surcharges, or Aer Lingus for cheap transatlantic economy. No other currency in points travel offers this level of inter-program flexibility across a major alliance.
AA Short-Haul at 7,500–9,000 Avios OW
American Airlines flights under 650 miles cost just 7,500–9,000 Avios one-way - significantly less than AAdvantage dynamically prices the same routes. A Boston–New York or Chicago–Detroit flight in economy for under 10,000 points is exceptional value. This sweet spot applies to all AA-operated flights of that distance, and since five US banks transfer to BA at 1:1, accumulating enough Avios for domestic hops is achievable from a single month of credit card spend.
Qatar Qsuites Business Class via Avios
Qatar Airways Privilege Club uses Avios as its currency and is part of the same inter-program ecosystem. Transferring to BA and then moving to Qatar gives access to Qsuites - widely considered the world's best business class product - at around 70,000 Avios one-way from the US to Doha. No fuel surcharges apply to Qatar Privilege Club award bookings (only a booking fee). Chase cardholders who transfer to BA can redirect Avios to Qatar, making this the cheapest legitimate path to Qsuites from a Chase card.
Iberia to Spain: Lower Surcharges, Same Avios
When flying to Spain or connecting through Madrid, booking through Iberia Plus instead of BA Executive Club gets you identical Avios pricing with dramatically lower surcharges. Iberia charges roughly $175 round-trip in total fees vs. British Airways' $600–$800 on the same transatlantic route. Since Avios transfer 1:1 between BA and Iberia, the strategy is simple: earn here through US bank transfers, then move the Avios to Iberia and book. Off-peak business class to Madrid runs just 40,500 Avios one-way.
How to transfer points to Avios
Follow these four steps every time. The golden rule: find available award space before transferring - transfers are irreversible.
- 1
Find the award first
Search for award availability on Avios's website before moving a single point. Note the flight number, date, cabin, and exact miles required. Award space can disappear at any moment - and transfers are irreversible.
- 2
Check for an active transfer bonus
Scroll up to the Current Bonuses table. If a bonus is live (e.g. +20%), you get 20% more miles for free - 10,000 points transferred becomes 12,000 miles. Timing your transfer to an active bonus is one of the easiest ways to stretch your balance without spending more.

Avios award chart - highlights
Chart type: Fixed distance-based with peak/off-peak tiers (BA own-metal); standard Avios distance chart for partner airlines
BA Avios prices awards by total miles flown, divided into distance bands. BA own-metal flights have separate peak and off-peak pricing tiers. Partner airline flights (AA, Iberia, Finnair, Qatar, Cathay) follow the standard Avios distance chart without BA's surcharges. The most valuable redemptions are on partner carriers - particularly AA domestic and Iberia to Spain.
RT = round-trip (OW × 2 for most itineraries). BA peak pricing applies roughly mid-June–mid-September and holiday periods - off-peak rates shown above. Verify current rates at ba.com and check Iberia / Qatar for lower-surcharge alternatives before transferring.
How much are Avios miles worth?
The value of a Avios mile varies significantly depending on redemption type. Economy redemptions typically deliver near the base valuation; business and first class awards - especially on partner airlines - can return 3–10× more per mile than the average.
Worked example
9,000 Avios for AA Chicago → Detroit economy (cash fare ~$180) = ~2.0¢ per Avios - 40% above the average valuation for a short domestic hop
Valuations per TPG April 2026 (1.4¢ average). Actual value varies by specific route, date, and cabin availability.
Best credit cards for earning Avios miles
British Airways rarely has a compelling US co-branded card. The most effective strategy is earning transferable points from a premium bank card and converting them when you are ready to book.
Chase Sapphire Reserve
Earns 3× on travel and dining, transfers Chase UR to BA Avios instantly at 1:1. The same card also transfers directly to Iberia Plus and Aer Lingus - giving you three Avios ecosystem entry points from one card. The 60,000-point welcome bonus funds 6–8 AA short-haul trips or most of a one-way Qatar Qsuites redemption.
Amex Platinum Card
Earns 5× on flights booked directly with airlines and through Amex Travel. Transfers Amex MR to BA Avios at 1:1 in 24–48 hours. The 80,000–100,000 MR welcome bonus provides enough Avios for transatlantic business class. Useful for frequent flyers who can maximize the 5× airline category.
Capital One Venture X
Earns 2× miles on everything, transfers to BA Avios at 1:1. The 75,000-mile welcome bonus combined with the card's flat 2× earn rate makes it the simplest everyday card for Avios accumulation. Capital One occasionally runs BA Avios transfer bonuses, amplifying the value further.
Bilt Mastercard
Earn Avios on rent payments with no transaction fee - the only card that does this. Transfers to BA instantly at 1:1. Earns 3× dining, 2× travel. For renters, this card passively generates thousands of Avios per month from rent alone, accelerating toward AA domestic or Qatar Qsuites redemptions.
Avios vs other oneworld programs
British Airways Avios competes most directly with American Airlines AAdvantage and Iberia Plus for oneworld award bookings. All three programs cover overlapping routes, but differ sharply on surcharges, earning access, and flexibility - choosing the right one can save hundreds of dollars in fees on the same flight.
Bottom line
Use BA Executive Club primarily as an Avios accumulation hub given its five US bank transfer partners - then redirect points to Iberia for low-surcharge Europe business class (40,500 Avios OW vs BA's 62,500 with heavy fees) or Qatar for Qsuites. Use AAdvantage for booking oneworld partner business class on a fixed chart (Qatar Qsuites, JAL First) without surcharges. Use Iberia Plus directly when flying to Spain or South America - it offers the best pricing and lowest fees in the Avios ecosystem for those routes.
